A Facebook Hiatus

Last week I decided to take a one-week break from Facebook, mainly because I'm incessantly checking social media updates on my phone. I started to get tired of being attached to notifications, posts and the dynamic, ever-changing news feed. I just needed a hiatus.

After a week of retraining my brain to not open the application, resisting the urge to look at the adorable pictures of my MIL's new puppy, and ignoring the funny quips that friends share on their pages, I realized that Facebook - for better or worse - is my connection to many of my family and friends. And unfortunately, Facebook is my conduit for worldly events.

Take the recent terrorist attack in Paris. If I were on Facebook, I would have known immediately that something tragic occurred in Europe. Then, I would have searched credible news sources to find out more information. But instead, it took me three-hours to learn something even happened in France. So, it's sad to admit but Facebook provides me my news.

Regarding life events, I definitely experienced a bit of FOMO (fear of missing out) - not being able to see the photos of my friends' Vegas trip, or not being a part of a HUGE announcement like my closest friend's engagement. I felt like I wasn't in the loop!

So, all in all - Facebook isn't that bad. It serves as my connector in a time that life moments are posted and celebrated in a virtual world. And, I guess that's okay. Just as long as we experience those moments in the "real" world as well. =) Rant (and challenge) done.
